15 And 17 Spital, Spital

15 and 17 Spital are a pair of mid to late 19th century, three-bay, single-storey and attic townhouses in Aberdeen, designed with Classical details. They were adapted by Sir J Ninian Comper in the 1890s as part of the adjoining St Margaret of Scotland Convent. The buildings are constructed from stugged granite ashlar, featuring base and eaves courses. Each house has central doors beneath consoled canopies, flanked by windows. The outer bays include canted dormer windows with bracketed eaves courses, while the center has later tri-partite dormers. The ashlar skews are adorned with moulded skewputts, and there are harled two-storey gabled outshots at the rear.

Number 15 includes a tall single-storey infill block, likely a former chapel, which has a canted gable, a large rectangular rooflight, and two pointed-arch windows with coloured glass from the north party wall of the adjacent convent wing.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case, featuring a four-pane glazing pattern. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are cast iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers.

Inside, the properties retain a well-detailed interior with decorative plasterwork, fireplaces, and cast iron balusters, as observed in 2008.
