Joint Station, Aberdeen

The Joint Station in Aberdeen is a long single-storey railway station built between 1913 and 1920, designed by engineer J A Parker. It faces east and features a prominent Beaux-Arts entrance pavilion that is double height and has five bays. This central pavilion is adorned with a full-length cast iron cantilevered canopy and is flanked by asymmetrical classical granite pavilions to the north and south. The central pavilion is constructed of yellow sandstone, while the outer pavilions are made of granite ashlar. There are modern extensions added to the south in 2006.

The entrance elevation is on the east side and has been altered at ground level. It includes mid-height semi-circular window openings with fan-light glazing, along with small paired deep-set square windows above. The bays are separated by paired Doric columns, and there is a deep dentilled cornice topped by a stepped parapet.

The interior, which was last seen in 2006, features a spacious concourse with an impressive shallow segmental-arched glass and steel roof, complemented by glazed end screens. The platforms are equipped with glass and steel awnings supported by cast iron columns, which have decorative timber valances. There are some flat-arched openings on the block to the east, along with glass and timber doors. A timber-lined bridge provides access to the platforms from the west, although the internal spaces of the buildings have been comprehensively modernised.

Additionally, there is a road overbridge located to the north of the station, built around 1909 or 1913. This bridge is a riveted and latticed two-span steel bowstring structure, with flat-span plate-girder pedestrian bridges on either side. It features a plaque inscribed with 'ALEXr FINDLAY & CO LIMITED PARKNEUK WORKS MOTHERWELL' and has corniced and panelled granite terminal piers.
