Description

The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension road bridge that spans the Forth Estuary. It was commissioned in 1947 and constructed between 1958 and 1964 by consulting engineers Mott, Hay and Anderson in association with Freeman Fox & Partners. The bridge features twin suspension towers, with a main span of 1006 meters and equal side spans of 408 meters, making a total length of 1822 meters. At both ends, there are approach viaducts supported on paired piers, with 10 pairs to the south and 6 pairs to the north, each connected at the top by a round arch.

The main deck and suspension towers are made of steel, while the approach viaducts consist of steel box girders with a concrete deck and concrete piers. The suspension towers are 150 meters tall and have twin legs connected by lattice bracing that supports the cable saddles. The main cables are anchored in rock beneath the approach viaducts within concrete anchor chambers that have Corennie granite transferred aggregate facing. Vertical suspender cables support the main deck, which includes two carriageways and pedestrian cycle/pathways that are cantilevered out on either side. The suspended deck is supported by a steel stiffening lattice truss, and the bases of the approach piers also feature granite transferred aggregate facing.
