Description

The Forth Road Bridge is a significant suspension road bridge constructed between 1958 and 1964, following a commission in 1947 involving consulting engineers Mott, Hay and Anderson in association with Freeman Fox & Partners and architects Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, Son & Partners. Spanning the Forth Estuary, the bridge features twin suspension towers with a main span of 1006 meters and equal side spans of 408 meters, resulting in a total length of 1822 meters.

At each end of the bridge, approach viaducts are supported by paired piers, with 10 pairs on the southern side and 6 pairs on the northern side, each connected at the top by a round arch. The main deck and suspension towers are made of steel, while the approach viaducts consist of steel box girders with a concrete deck and concrete piers. The suspension towers are 150 meters tall and feature twin legs connected by lattice bracing, which supports the cable saddles.

The main cables are anchored in rock below the approach viaducts within concrete anchor chambers, which are faced with Corennie granite transferred aggregate. Vertical suspender cables support the main deck, which accommodates two carriageways and has cantilevered pedestrian and cycle pathways on both the east and west sides. The suspended deck is supported by a steel stiffening lattice truss, and the bases of the approach piers are also faced with granite transferred aggregate.
