Description
Granton Harbour in Edinburgh was mainly constructed around 1860, although the facing of the embankment is likely slightly later, with some remnants dating back to around 1840. The sloping sea embankment, which is wider at the base, is faced with coursed sandstone blocks on the seaward side. The profile of the embankment curves upwards to form an almost vertical wall, with the blocks at the top being stugged and featuring droved ashlar coping with rounded edges above. The southern sides of the embankment slope more gently and are flat in parts, made of turfed earth and enclosed by a low sandstone wall with coping blocks along the roadside. This wall is primarily tooled and rounded, but includes some droved ashlar blocks with rounded edges on the western side. The embankment and wall connect to the mid pier east of the easternmost slipway at the southeast angle and curve along the shoreline, terminating just east of Wardie Square where it meets a separate section of wall.
There is a gap in the embankment that serves as an entranceway to the eastern breakwater, with coped droved ashlar sides rising from short flat piers on the south to taller flat-coped piers on the north. These piers are likely the only visible remnants of the circa 1840 wall. The ground between the piers is paved with stone setts. Additionally, there is a minor entranceway to the east, with rounded edges to the wall on either side, and stone blocks forming uneven 'steps' leading down to the foreshore.
