Annalong Presbyterian Church, Glassdrumman Road, Annalong, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4TH

Annalong Presbyterian Church, situated on Glassdrumman Road in Annalong, Co Down, was originally built as a rectangular plan barn church aligned east-west, with a square tower and a rear extension added later. The church was erected between 1840 and 1842, with a gallery added in 1861. The tower's foundation stone dates to 1962, and it was opened the following year. The tower is named the Pyper Memorial, commemorating the church’s minister from 1910 to 1945.

The church's east (entrance) elevation is constructed of finely-dressed granite blocks in regular courses, featuring stepped ashlar quoins. It incorporates a semicircular-headed entrance and matching window recesses above and to either side, all trimmed with smoothly dressed granite. Each window recess contains a set of paired lancet windows with a glazed panel in the spandrel. A datestone reads ‘1840’. A two-stage tower abuts the east elevation and projects from it, employing similar construction and stepped quoins. The tower has two small semicircular-headed top-hung metal-framed windows near the base, with a foundation stone dated 1962 positioned beneath them. Above these windows, there is a single window resembling those on the main façade. A circular clock face sits above this window. The upper stage of the tower is marked by a projecting stringcourse and contains a pair of tall semicircular louvered openings with eyebrow hood mouldings. Crenellated parapets with corner finials top the tower, concealing a flat roof with a flagpole. The north elevation is cement rendered and includes four semicircular-headed windows and a modern panelled door on the right side. A recent extension from 1986 comprises the west elevation, featuring multiple semicircular-headed top-hung windows at two levels and a central door. A rear extension, known as the Cunningham extension after the father of its sponsor, was added in 1986. Stained glass windows depicting Christ were installed in 1978.

The church’s interior underwent major renovations in 1989, including the insertion of a vestibule screen. The church is surrounded by a graveyard, and a granite block boundary wall, coped with rusticated granite, separates the grounds from the adjacent roads. The church’s former use was as a Presbyterian meeting place, and its current use remains as a church.
