Navigation Mark, In rear garden of 12 The Square, Annalong, Newry, Co Down, BT34 4TS

This unusual structure, likely built between 1800 and 1819, is a significant landmark in the history of local navigation and the development of Annalong Harbour. It stands in the rear garden of 12 The Square, Annalong, Newry, Co Down.

The Navigation Mark is a whitewashed rubble masonry post, approximately 3.0 to 3.7 metres high with a circular cross-section. It tapers to an oversailing conical top, finished with a rounded boulder finial. A television aerial is now attached to the top.

Although not specifically depicted on Alexander Nimmo’s 1821 chart of Annalong Harbour, a line extends from the harbour entrance channel to this location, labelled ‘landing mark SE ¾ by compass’, suggesting the mark was present at that time. While it's possible the land mark was constructed later, perhaps by the Board of Works during harbour improvements in the 1840s, its origins likely predate this.

The structure possesses industrial archaeological interest and contributes to the group value of the area. It is of local interest, reflecting social, cultural and economic importance, and is notably rare. The ownership is private.
