Description
Mount Mill Bridge is a single-span segmental arch road bridge over the Newry River, dating from approximately 1810. It is located on Glen Road, approximately 3.5 miles from Newry, immediately north of the Newry Bypass at the Sheepbridge exit, aligned north-west to south-east and carrying a flat rather than hump-backed carriageway.
The bridge is constructed of random-coursed faced granite with cut granite voussoirs forming the segmental arch. The parapets on either side of Glen Road comprise replacement random-coursed rock-faced stone with random-stone coping. The south-west elevation shows the segmental arch clearly, with the spandrels and abutments constructed of random-coursed faced granite. The abutments display a slight batter. The arch soffit and piers are coursed with random rubble stone at the base. The north-east elevation was not accessible at the time of survey.
The bridge is surrounded by open countryside on all sides. It is situated east of the Mount Mills complex, a corn mill site dating from circa 1800, and west of a Motte (SMR: DOW046:002). A twentieth-century metal footbridge is located to the west side of the bridge, allowing access to lands south of the river.
An estate map of 1805 belonging to Arthur Innes of Dromantine House shows the location where the bridge would be built, annotated as "place for the Bridge to be made". The bridge does not appear on this map but is shown, uncaptioned, on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1834, providing a secure date of construction between 1805 and 1834. The bridge is captioned "Mount Mill Br[idge]" on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1859 and subsequently.
The bridge is relatively sophisticated in design, with a segmental rather than semi-circular arch supporting a level carriageway. This indicates skilled stonemason work and suggests considerable construction cost, and the bridge would have improved road connections with Newry, making the nearby mill a more attractive business proposition. The stone parapets appear to have been rebuilt in recent years, most likely as a consequence of road improvement works.
