Description

A house was demolished in the mid-19th century to make way for a widened road. It first appeared on the 1859 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting a construction date between 1840 and 1859. The Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch first survey records suggest it may have been a toll house, although this is unlikely due to the abandonment of tolls by the mid-1800s and the lack of a projecting bay window typical of toll houses. The slide depicts only the rear of the building, which was single-storey and two bays, with a hipped roof covered in natural slate and a chimney in the centre of the ridge. The walls were cement rendered with advanced eaves. A lean-to with a corrugated iron roof abutted the left bay of the rear elevation, and the right bay contained a single, exposed box sliding sash window.
