Outbuildings, Opp. 31 Clontigora Road, Newry, Co Armagh

A pair of outbuildings, likely dating from between 1840 and 1859, form a roadside feature. The larger building, aligned east-west, has a west gable directly set on the road. It has a pitched corrugated metal roof with a raised cement skew to its east gable. The walls are whitewashed random rubble, with a plain timber door rising to the apex of the west gable at its centre. All other faces are blank. To its right stands a smaller, similarly detailed outbuilding, also with a west gable facing the road. This smaller building has a monopitched roof with whitewashed cement skews and a central timber door with a timber lintel on its north face; the remaining faces are blank. The left cheek and rear elevation of this outbuilding are unrendered. A small, central concrete yard is enclosed between the two buildings, fronted by a lime-rendered wall constructed of concrete blocks and accessed by a wrought iron gate set within a lime-rendered rubble stone gate pier. The yard is bounded to the rear by a lime-rendered rubble wall. The outbuildings first appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1861, but are not shown on the earlier 1835 edition. They are considered to have vernacular characteristics.
