Description
Killeen Bridge is a mid-19th century railway bridge of architectural and technical interest, associated with the development of Irish railways and notable figures such as Sir John Macneill and William Dargan. It carries the Newry to Dundalk road over the Belfast to Dublin double-track railway line.
The bridge’s design represents the culmination of railway bridge construction before the widespread adoption of brick and metal. It is similar to other rail bridges in the area and forms a group associated with the substantial 3km rock-cut excavation between Cloghoge and Killeen.
Constructed in 1851 for the Dublin & Belfast Junction Railway Company, the bridge features a highly skewed, single semi-elliptical span. The abutments are built of random rubble, while the remainder is constructed from granodiorite blocks. The arch soffit is regularly laid at an angle to accommodate the skew. The bridge is embellished with tooled edges to the abutments, narrow vee-jointed rock-faced voussoirs (also with a tooled edge) stepped into the spandrel blocks, a finely dressed string course above the crown, and finely dressed and chamfered parapet copings. The parapets extend slightly beyond the spandrels, and both outside faces feature datestones reading '1851'. The parapets terminate in slightly projecting terminal piers.
The line between Belfast and Dublin became fully operational after the completion of the nearby Craigmore Viaduct in 1852. The bridge's construction was overseen by William Dargan, based on designs by Sir John Macneill.
