9 Newtown Road, Newry, Co Armagh, BT35 8RJ

This is a two-storey house aligned north-south on the west side of Newtown Road. It likely dates from between 1860 and 1879, and was probably raised to its present form around that time. The house has been extensively modernised and is now of limited architectural interest.

The pitched roof is covered with artificial slate, with a brick chimney at each gable. The walls are pebble-dashed, with a smooth cement-rendered basecourse. The principal elevation faces east and features a brick porch with a pitched artificial slate roof. A modern timber door is set within the porch, flanked by blank cheeks. Single windows are positioned on either side of the porch, and three windows are arranged on the first floor, the central window being smaller and positioned above the porch. All windows are modern timber casements with concrete cills.

The left gable abuts a lower outbuilding which appears as part of the main house; the exposed section of this outbuilding is blank. The right gable is also blank. The rear elevation was not inspected. A whitewashed lime-rendered rubble stone boundary wall runs along the road, with stone copings. Large square-in-section gate piers, supporting modern gates, stand at the right end of the wall. To the left of the gate pier, a small stile of granite steps is set into the wall. A smaller pair of square piers support a modern farmyard gate at the left end of the wall.

According to an Ordnance Survey map from 1835, a small, one-storey building occupied this plot. Its valuation was £2.5s.0d in 1862, but was revised to £3.10s.0d in 1869 or 1877, remaining unchanged thereafter.
