Description
29 Carn Road is a two-storey, two-bay vernacular house aligned north-south on a lane south of Carn Road in the townland of Aghayalloge. It was substantially rebuilt in the mid-1860s, as evidenced by a 150% increase in its valuation between 1862 and 1866, having previously existed as a modest single-storey structure.
The house features a pitched natural slate roof with a central brick chimney and tiled verges, together with half-round metal rainwater goods and a downpipe to the middle of the left bay. All walls are lime-rendered random rubble with a tarred base course.
The principal elevation faces east. At the extreme right end of the right bay stands a slightly advanced windbreak porch with a monopitched natural slate roof, a tongue-and-groove sheeted door with glazed panel, and a single granite step; its right and left cheeks are blank. To the porch's left is a 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window with horns and granite cill. All other windows are similarly detailed. To the first floor centre, between the ground floor window and porch, is a 2/2 vertically divided sash, slightly diminished in height. The left bay contains two ground floor windows: a 1/2 sash (probably originally 2/2) to the right, and a similar window to the left now partially boarded up. A 2/2 sash, diminished in height, is set to the first floor centre between these two windows. The left gable is blank. The rear elevation has a 1/1 sash window to each floor: that to the ground floor is at the right end of the left bay, and that to the first floor is at the centre of the right bay. The right gable is blank.
The right gable is abutted by the remains of a ruinous single-storey rubble stone outbuilding with a door opening to the centre of the east elevation; ghost marks of a pitched roof remain visible.
The front yard contains two rubble stone outbuildings set either side. The northern outbuilding has a pitched natural slate roof and tarred base course. Its main south elevation has a tongue-and-groove sheeted door to the left and a corrugated metal door to the right. The left gable and rear elevation are blank. Its right gable is abutted by a lower, shallower, and ruinous outbuilding; its rear elevation is abutted by a smaller similarly detailed outbuilding with a large pair of corrugated metal doors in its main west gable, all other faces blank. The southern outbuilding is ruinous, with only the left gable and rear wall remaining. It formerly had a monopitched natural slate roof with a small brick chimney to the rear left corner, and retains a fire opening with cast iron grate in the left gable wall.
The group is set well back from Carn Road and accessed by a long grassed lane. The front yard is bounded by a pair of rubble stone gate piers supporting a wrought iron gate. The house appears to retain most of its internal fabric and, together with its outbuildings, forms an attractive vernacular grouping of local interest.
