Description

Newtown Bridge, built around 1850, carries Newtown Road over the double-track Belfast-Dublin railway line just west of the main Dundalk road. The bridge is of architectural interest due to its design and quality of construction, and has historical associations with Sir John Macneill and William Dargan, significant figures in the development of Irish railways. It is part of a group of rail-related bridges of a similar date.

The bridge is a slightly skewed single semi-elliptical span constructed from coarsely-dressed granodiorite blocks, regularly coursed except for the irregularly laid parapet. The soffit blocks are angled to match the skew. Decorative features include tooled edges to the abutments, rusticated voussoirs, a finely dressed and chamfered string course at arch spring level and just above the crown, and detailed parapet copings. Shallow buttresses are present on the approach walls, which are edged with tooling. The parapets end in out-projecting piers, and the road surface is slightly humped over the bridge.

The bridge was erected by the Dublin & Belfast Junction Railway Company to designs by their chief engineer, Sir John Macneill, with construction undertaken by William Dargan. The railway section between Killeen and Dundalk opened in 1850, and with the completion of the Craigmore Viaduct in 1852, the entire line between Belfast and Dublin became fully operational. The bridge retains its original function as a road bridge and is of industrial archaeological interest.
