Description

This is a vernacular house and associated outbuildings, situated on Cottage Road in Newry, County Armagh. The house is likely to have been constructed between 1860 and 1879, although a smaller building was present on the site by 1835.

The building comprises a two-storey right bay and a single-storey left bay, aligned roughly north-south along the west side of Cottage Road. The right bay is elevated, providing additional accommodation over the sitting room, which is a characteristic feature of vernacular hillside houses. The roof over the right bay is covered with natural slate, while the roof over the left bay is corrugated asbestos cement. Each gable has a brick chimney; the left gable’s chimney is cement-dashed and the right gable’s chimney is brick. A concrete skew is present on the left gable. All external walls are cement-dashed, except where otherwise noted. The main elevation faces east.

The right bay has a central timber top-hung casement window on each floor, with painted reveals and cills. The left bay has a similar, wider window to the left, with a smooth rendered and painted architrave. To the right of this window is a wind break porch, similarly rendered and painted, with a tongue-and-groove door. The cheeks of the porch are blank. Both gables are blank, the left gable of the left bay being smooth cement-rendered. The rear elevation features windows similarly positioned and detailed to the front facade, with the exception of a 2/2 sliding sash window on the first floor of the left bay. Windows on the left bay lack cills.

The right gable of the house abuts a lower, single-storey outbuilding with a pitched natural slate roof and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. The outbuilding has two tongue-and-groove sheeted doors on its front face and a blank gable that abuts the adjoining house at HB16/13/059. Additional outbuildings, similarly detailed, are located in front of the house – one directly opposite the building and a longer one to the south.
