Description

This is a small, well-proportioned, single-story schoolhouse dating from around 1835, with a porch addition made in 1909. It is situated on a rise on the east side of Drumaghlis Road, just south of Kilmore Presbyterian Church, approximately 3½ miles east of Ballynahinch. The building shares a similar appearance and alignment with Kilmore Sexton's house, which flanks the graveyard surrounding the church. It previously served as a church lecture hall and is now used as a store. Its special interest lies in its architectural style and proportions, local historical significance, picturesque setting, and its group value alongside the surrounding church buildings.

The schoolhouse is relatively plain with a hipped roof and a gabled entrance porch extending from the short west elevation. The porch has a timber-sheeted door on its southern face, and a boarded-up window with a small panel above on its west-facing gable. This panel is reportedly inscribed with ‘1909’, though the inscription is currently obscured by vegetation and weathering. The south facade of the main building has four boarded-up window openings. The east facade is blank, while the north facade features five semicircular-headed sash windows (9/6), now fitted with plastic glazing. The building is finished in unpainted rough cast render, with a slated hipped roof. There are no visible rainwater goods. A significant change in ground level rises to the southeast of the building, and a steep drop exists to the north.

Originally a schoolhouse constructed around 1840, it is depicted on the Ordnance Survey map of 1858 as a “National school”. In the early 1900s, a new schoolhouse was built on the opposite side of Drumaghlis Road, after which this building became a lecture hall associated with Kilmore Presbyterian Church. The building appears to have functioned in this capacity until the 1980s. The listing includes the former schoolhouse and an adjacent wall.
