Description

Two-storey rubble-built gabled outbuilding of probable late 19th century origin, situated on the edge of a field near the junction of Bryansford Road and the main road through Bryansford village, Ballyhafry, Newcastle, County Down.

The south façade features a central timber-sheeted door at upper level, accessed via stone steps with brick dressings. Flanking this doorway are two small square openings, also timber-sheeted with brick dressings. At lower level, to the right of the steps are three tiny slit openings with brick dressings; a similar opening appears to the left of the steps.

The north façade contains three ground-floor doorways. The left and centre doorways are pedestrian doors with small accompanying sidelight openings, both with timber sheeting, brick dressings, and brick relieving arches. The right doorway is a large double doorway with timber sheeting and brick dressings, topped by a concrete lintel. At upper level are two small window openings to the left and centre, with a large loft doorway opening to the right; all are timber-sheeted. Both gables have a single small opening to the upper level, similar to those on the south side.

The east façade contains a ground-level doorway to the right, matching the south façade type but with a recently replaced lintel. Directly above this is another similar doorway.

The building is constructed in fieldstone rubble with granite quoins and a brick eaves course. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with rendered parapets.

Whilst buildings are recorded on this site on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1859, none correspond with the position of the present structure. The use of brick dressings and other architectural details suggest a date of around 1880.
