Description
This is a picturesque, two-storey, semi-detached house, one of a pair built in 1907. It is located on the northwest side of the main road through Bryansford village, Newcastle, County Down. The front (southeast) facade is symmetrical. A gabled open porch is centrally located on the ground floor, with timber supporting piers rising from a low rendered wall to a gabled roof featuring decorative barges, a tie beam, and a finial. A modern timber and glazed door is within the porch. To the left of the porch is a large tripartite sash window with a moulded in-and-out surround, and a similar window is positioned to the right. Above, two gabled half-dormers, mirroring the porch’s detailing with barges, tie beams, and finials, each contain a small sash window with vertical glazing bars (two panes over two). The west gable is blank, with the roofline extending to include a tie beam and finial. The rear of the property is now dominated by a large, modern, part two-storey, part single-storey, flat-roofed extension that cuts into the original roof pitch, along with a modern, single-storey, flat-roofed garage extension to the right. The front facade and gable are finished in lined and painted render with bevelled quoins, while the rear facade and extensions are finished in unpainted rough cast. A granite panel on the right side of the front facade reads ‘Wyllie Cottages 1907’. The roof is covered in natural slate, and there are two rendered chimney stacks. The stack to the northeast (shared with No. 15) appears to have been recently rebuilt. The building has a mix of cast iron and PVC rainwater goods. A low rendered wall encloses a small front garden. These houses were originally built in 1907 for workers within the Roden Estate, and this particular house is believed to have been the residence of Lord Roden’s coachman or chauffeur. The property was acquired from the estate by the current owner's aunt in 1948.
