Description
East Gate of Old White Linen Hall
An imposing Classical gateway of well-proportioned neo-classical design, now sited beside a playground in a housing estate off Canal Quay. It represents the earliest, and perhaps only, surviving white linen hall gateway in Ulster, though compromised by its surroundings it retains much of its integrity.
The gateway consists of two ashlar granite piers supporting a semicircular arch with pediment above. Each pier is rectangular in section, rising ten ashlar courses from a projecting moulded base to the spring of the entrance arch. The inside faces have rebated reveals for gates, of which only the hinges now survive. At the spring level, each pier is ornamented with a fluted frieze on its outer faces (the reveal face being plain). Above this runs a narrow moulded cornice, followed by square recessed panels on the three outer faces. The front and rear panels have moulded edges and feature decorative motifs: the left panel depicts a flax spinning wheel, the right panel shows a harp and crown, with these motifs repeated in the same order on the rear face. The side panels are blank. A Greek-key frieze crowns each pier, topped by a deep overhanging cornice. Above this, pedimented forms rise from the top of each pier, each with its own Greek-key frieze and heavy projecting cornice, terminated at ridge and corners by plain square acroteria. The semicircular arch beneath the pediments features radiating ashlar voussoirs with a raised keystone. A modern metal plaque on the left pier records: "Linenhall arch. Built in 1783: former entrance to White Linenhall; Military Barracks; Linenhall Square". The outer faces are patched with masonry where former boundary walls have been removed. No traces of associated buildings survive.
The gateway formed the eastern entrance to the White Linen Hall, a six-acre complex erected about 1783 to the design of Dublin architect Samuel Proule. It was built to enable Ulster's linen merchants to export white linen directly from the north of Ireland without routing through Dublin. However, the opening of a white linen hall in Belfast (where the City Hall now stands) rendered the Newry hall redundant. Before 1819, the complex was sold to the Army for use as barracks, accommodating over 1,100 men. A photograph from the late 19th century by Lawrence shows the gate with deep jambs projecting from the piers, a pair of sheeted timber doors, and a timber lintel at arch spring level. The barracks closed in the mid-1920s, and the site was subsequently purchased by Newry Urban District Council for housing development. The gateway now stands devoid of its original gates, serving as an ornamental survivor of this important commercial enterprise.
