Description

The building is a former power station, situated on the left bank of the Newry River at the south end of a sloping weir. Construction likely occurred between 1900 and 1919. The building is a tall, one-storey structure with walls of red brick over a shuttered concrete basement. The pitched roof has been lost. Granite steps lead up to an entrance on the south wall, where only the left timber door frame remains within a flat brick head. A window opening sits to the right of the entrance, now without its frame. Single window openings are present in both gable ends, with missing bricks below the sills. Small, blind roundels are positioned at each apex. A window on the north elevation also has missing bricks to the jambs and under the cill.

Water is diverted from the river by the weir into a holding pond located just beyond the east gable. A Vee-profile trash rack is positioned above a segmental headed arch leading to the basement, where a turbine is located. A vertical timber sluice with rack and pinion, now decayed and not in situ, regulated the flow. Spent water emerges under a segmental arched west gable to the tailrace and river. A concrete-lined channel, with a vertical sluice emplacement, is located immediately north of the building, intended for diverting water when the turbine is under inspection.

The power station first appears in Valuation Revision Book entries dated 1904, operated by W&G Moorhead, and was taken over by David Ferris in 1920, remaining in use until after 1930. The building is noted as derelict and possesses industrial archaeological interest.
