Description

This is a one-story, single-bay well house situated along the Head Road near Annalong, constructed between 1900 and 1919. It has group value due to its association with the Annalong Weir (HB 16/01/052) and the Mourne Scheme, which was part of the Belfast water supply system.

The building was erected by the contractors Fisher and Le Fanu on behalf of the Belfast City & District Water Commissioners (BCDWC), and was designed by the BCDWC's Engineer, L.L. Macassey. It was completed shortly after the official opening of the Conduit in October 1901. It is a utilitarian structure, but with surprising embellished detailing.

The walls are built of rock-faced granite blocks laid in irregular courses, with a projecting base featuring a rusticated chamfer. The roof is covered in natural slates with corbelled, finely-dressed granite eaves. The gable copings, gable apex, and knee stones are also of finely-dressed granite. Cast-iron rainwater goods are present. A wrought-iron double door, with rusticated jambs and a segmental voussoired head, provides access on the north-west gable. Above the door is a louvred ventilation roundel, which is repeated on the opposite gable. Three four-paned fixed timber windows are located along each side wall, each with rusticated jambs and lintels, and splayed, finely-dressed cills; transparent plastic security panels have been fitted to the windows.

Unlike four similar well houses at Monenydorragh Upper More, Tullybranigan, Ballykine, and Creevytenant, this building regulated the flow of water into the nearby Mixing Well (HB 16/01/055), rather than controlling flow into a siphon. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
