Gauging Weir, Dunnywater, Annalong, Newry, Co Down

The Gauging Weir and associated gauging station, located near Dunnywater in Annalong, Newry, Co Down, were constructed between 1880 and 1899 as part of the initial phase of the Mourne Scheme, designed to supply Belfast with water. The structures have group value in their association with a nearby well house and intercepting weir.

The weir itself is a dressed-granite structure across the river, diverting water into the gauging station situated on the left bank. It consists of granite blocks laid in regular courses with a metal plate across the cill. A flight of granite steps provides access to the gauging station from the road. The station is a one-storey, single-bay building with a flat concrete roof and cement-rendered walls. The walls feature stepped rusticated quoins and finely dressed door and window surrounds.

The gauging station was built by the Belfast Water Commissioners. It predates the construction, around 1900, of the Annalong Weir downstream (HB16/01/052), which diverted water into the Annalong – Belfast conduit and was opened in 1901. The gauging weir and station remain in use and are of industrial archaeological interest. The listing encompasses both the gauging weir and the gauging station.
