Description

Maryfield is a two-storey Neo-Georgian house built in 1952 on the south-west side of Bryansford Avenue, west of Newcastle town centre, County Down. It was designed by the Belfast architects Smyth & Dornan for Mrs E. Dickson.

The house comprises a main block with single-storey side wings set back from the principal façade. The entire exterior is finished in roughcast and painted. The roofs are gabled and covered in asbestos slates with substantial eave overhangs, and there are three rendered chimney stacks. Cast iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout.

The front façade is largely symmetrical. At the centre of the ground floor is a large hipped-roof porch, added around 1990. This porch has timber-sheeted double doors to the front with multi-pane glazed sidelights on either side. The roof is copper covered. Within the porch is a panelled and glazed door to the hallway. To the left and right of the porch are sash windows with Georgian-style 8 over 8 panes. The first floor has three similar but smaller windows grouped centrally, with the outer windows not aligned with those on the ground floor.

The single-storey side wings flank each main gable. Each wing has three small four-pane windows to the front. The south-east wing has a flat-roofed garage attached, while the north-west wing has a small lean-to. The exposed sections of both gables feature sash windows: the south-east gable has a 3 over 6 window on the first floor and a small four-pane window at ground level; the north-west gable has two 3 over 6 sash windows on the first floor and a small four-pane window at ground level.

The rear façade is also symmetrical. At the centre of the ground floor is a pair of French doors serving the rear entrance, flanked by two large bow window bays with multi-pane glazing, brick bases, and lead-covered curved roofs. These bays are not original. At the first floor centre is a small balcony with wrought iron balustrading, accessed via French doors topped with a five-pane fanlight that also opens hopper fashion. Sash windows flank this doorway. The south-east wing extension to the rear is entirely glazed with incorporated glazed doors, while the north-west wing has modern sliding patio doors.

The house has been altered in recent years. The front porch and rear bow windows were added around 1990, and the internal layout has subsequently been modified.
