Description

Group of four small two storey terrace houses built circa 1880, located on the east side of Belfast Road in Ballynahinch. The houses are constructed of fieldstone rubble with original brick dressings to the upper floor windows. Number 9 is slightly taller than the others, which may indicate the group was not built simultaneously.

The front facades follow a consistent pattern of one ground floor window to the left, entrance door to the right, and two first floor windows. Numbers 9, 13 and 15 have had their ground floor windows enlarged with modern doors and frames. Number 13 has a small timber porch. Number 9 retains sash frames with horizontal glazing bars in a 2 over 2 pattern to the first floor. Numbers 9, 11 and 15 have brick decoration near the eaves. Numbers 11 and 13 have light mortar pointing.

All properties have gable roofs covered in natural slate except Number 13, which appears to have non-asbestos slates. Each house has a single brick chimney stack and a mixture of PVC and cast iron rainwater goods.

The rear elevations show significant modern alterations. Numbers 13 and 15 have large modern two storey extensions. Number 11 has a modern single storey extension with two PVC-framed windows to the rear facade. Number 9 has a small lean-to on the ground floor and retains sash windows to the rear; its rear facade is rendered and painted. Number 11's exposed rear facade is finished in unpainted render. Numbers 9 and 11 each have a Velux window to the rear.

Small front gardens are enclosed by low rendered walls to the footpath. The Belfast Road development began in the late 19th century; no buildings are recorded on the 1860 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting this terrace dates from around 1880.
