Description

The site comprises a ruined windmill, dating to around 1773. Located on a hilltop south of Windmill Lane and east of Ballynahinch town centre, it is of industrial archaeological interest and stands within the townland of Ballynahinch. The windmill was advertised as "newly built" in October 1773 and is depicted on maps of 1777, 1782, and around 1790. It is a circular structure built of random fieldstone rubble, approximately 8 metres in diameter, with walls over a metre thick. The windmill is now roofless, with segmental headed door openings at ground level and four window openings – two at the first floor level and two smaller openings above that. The stonework at the top of the tower has been restored in recent years, while other sections of the rubble display signs of recent repair. A circular ditch surrounds the windmill. During the 'Battle of Ballynahinch' in 1798, the area around the windmill saw significant fighting, and one insurgent, Hugh McCullough, was hanged from its sails. The mill appears to have been abandoned by 1834, as it is shown on the Ordnance Survey map of that year but not mentioned in other related records. The site is in private ownership.
