Description

This is a two-storey, five-bay building with a single-storey, one-bay wing attached, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. Originally a stable block for the nearby Manor House (No. 28 High Street), it has been significantly altered both internally and externally and now serves as an architect’s office.

The entrance elevation, five bays long and two stories high, features a central square-headed doorway with double doors and glazed upper panels. Flanking this are two four-pane double-hung sliding sash windows on each side of the ground floor. Above those windows are five four-pane double-hung sliding sash windows at the first floor, centred over the ground floor openings. A projecting, gabled two-storey bay is located at the east end, featuring a tripartite window on the ground floor and a single four-pane double-hung sliding sash window above, both set within wide plaster architraves with a keystone. The west end has a single-storey, one-bay section with a four-pane double-hung sliding sash window. The walls are plastered and rusticated, finished with coloured rendering and rusticated quoins. The roof is slated, with one gable chimney.

Internally, the building has been renovated extensively. The building fronts onto the former yard to the rear of the Manor House and lies within a conservation area. Original Ordnance Survey maps from 1832, revised in 1856, show the building in its original form. Renovation work was undertaken in 1985, by Manor Architects.
