Pump, Outside library at, 6 Church Street, Magherafelt

This is a rotary pump, likely dating from between 1880 and 1899. It serves as a rare reminder of a time when town pumps were essential for drinking water. The pump features an undecorated, splay-shaped column. When surveyed in 1993, only the column remained, bearing the inscription “J Scott Junr/Plumber/Cookstown.” The pump had been removed by 1996, but was subsequently repaired and repositioned outside the public library. The pump’s original location is documented on the 1906 Ordnance Survey map, then known as Pump Street. The plumber J. Scott Junr, whose name appears on the pump, operated businesses in Cookstown from around 1890, moving to James Street in 1913. Originally situated on King Street, the pump had fallen into disrepair and lost its top before being repaired and moved to its current prominent location outside the library. It is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest.
