Description
This is a well-designed outbuilding, partially in a Tudor Gothic style, designed by William John Booth. Originally constructed as stores for the forester’s house (listed separately as HB09/06/016A), it has been sensitively converted into a residential pied-a-terre. The original separating wall, gate piers, and gates have been preserved.
The building is a stone structure of 1½ stories and 6 bays, with a gabled, slated roof. The east gable features a centrally placed, single segmented two-light casement window with wood framing, illuminating the upper floor. The wall is constructed of coursed white limestone, featuring large kneelers and weathered bargeboards. The north elevation is divided into two sections. The first two bays, to the east, are built in a similar style to the east gable, including a segmented-headed door opening and a framed and sheeted door. Adjacent to this is a four-light diamond-paned window with a square-headed lintol and bevelled edge. Above, a two-light casement dormer is situated, with a gabled, timber-sheeted pediment. The roof is natural slate with kneelers and weathered bargeboards at each gable, incorporating a half-round gutter and two downpipes. The remaining four bays are constructed of random rubble white limestone, with red brick trim around three door openings and one two-pane window, which was formerly a door. This section has a natural slate roof, a half-round gutter, and a single downpipe. The west gable is built of random rubble with external steps leading to an upper-floor door centrally placed.
The first two bays are likely contemporary with the original forester’s house, dating from around 1840 (as noted in HB09/06/016A). The subsequent four bays to the west appear to be later in the same century, likely built around 1860-1870. The current owner converted the first two bays into living accommodation approximately ten years ago. The other four bays were previously converted into a coffee shop in the 1970s, although this business is now defunct. The building is located on the southwest side of the forester's house and is separated by a white limestone wall with gate piers and wrought iron gates.
