Description
This is a single-storey, two-bay direct entry house situated adjacent to 27 Tirnony Road, Maghera, County Londonderry. Built between 1820 and 1839, it is believed to be the earliest surviving building in the townland of Tirnony. Originally a pair of dwellings, the second is now represented by a wallstead set back from the main building line. The house is a notable example of vernacular architecture, typical for this part of Northern Ireland, although the original roof structure and roofing materials have been replaced.
The house faces east. The roof is now covered with corrugated iron, finished with a cement skew at the south end and continuing over a byre to the north. Sections of the roofing are missing or dislodged, and terminating in a lean-to corrugated iron-roofed shed featuring a fascia with an aperture made up of two vertical panes. Traces of a previous roofline are visible at a lower level on the gable of the byre. Two chimney stacks are present: one centrally positioned above the kitchen hearth and the other on the south gable, serving the parlour fireplace.
The exterior walls are finished with either roughcast render or exposed stone. The timber ledged and sheeted entrance door is flanked to the south by two windows. The window to the left is aluminium-framed with a modern surround and timber sheeted soffit. The window to the right retains its original timber frame within a newly plastered surround and a traditionally deep sill. The entrance to the byre, partially blocked with concrete blocks, retains remains of a timber sheeted door.
The building appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1831-2 and 1853. The listing includes the house, byre, and shed. Information was sourced from the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map of 1831-2 and the 1st revision Ordnance Survey map of 1853, as well as information provided by Niall O’Kane of the Carntogher Community Association. It was formerly a thatched house and is currently in residential use.
