Description
This lime kiln, located beside 48 Straidkilly Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, County Antrim, is an example of a once-frequently seen structure, now typically found in a derelict or incomplete state. The kiln is a basalt and limestone rubble structure with sloping, battered faces to the front and sides, built into the hillside on a square plan. It contains a circular chamber within. A draw hole is positioned at the base of the front face, formed by three orders of segmental arches, each recessed within the other. The innermost arch is incomplete due to missing voussoirs, which are basalt; the soffits are lime-plastered. The charging hole is partially obscured by vegetation. The kiln appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and is believed to have been constructed between 1820 and 1839. It was built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, often referred to as chalk, producing a rough powder for various applications. The structure is situated within the garden of a modern bungalow and is visible from the public road. The kiln is recorded as derelict and holds industrial archaeological interest.
