Description
This lime kiln is an example of a once-common structure, now frequently derelict or incomplete. Constructed of basalt rubble on a square plan and built into a slight hillside, it features three orders of recessed segmental arches of limestone on the front face. Some of the voussoirs, or wedge-shaped stones, from the outermost arch are missing. A lintel covers the draw hole, which is now blocked, and the charging hole on top is obscured by overgrowth. The kiln appears on the Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and is believed to have been built between 1820 and 1839 for the small-scale burning of white limestone, or "chalk," to produce a rough powder for various uses. It stands in a rural area within a field overlooking Carnlough Bay, located downhill from an access road to a former quarry which was used as a dump and is now closed. The kiln is currently derelict and of industrial archaeological interest, situated within the townland of Bay and held in private ownership.
