Description

The lime kiln is a limestone rubble structure built on a rectangular plan, set into a hillside overlooking the Glencloy River within a field. It is now derelict and incomplete. The structure is marked by bounding walls made of limestone rubble, with two openings across the front face, also in a ruinous state. These openings have twin arched features: a semi-circular red brick arch recessed within a larger semi-circular arch of limestone voussoirs. One recess contains a draw hole which remains closed, and the other has a draw hole that is broken open through its brick arch, revealing a circular charging hole lined with basalt rubble and open at the top, with a tree growing from it. Access to the charging holes from above is prevented by extensive overgrowth. The kiln, likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832. It was built for the small-scale burning of white limestone, or chalk, to produce a rough powder for various uses, and the dip in which it stands was originally a quarry. The site is privately owned and noted for its industrial archaeological interest.
