Description
This is a two-storey Victorian stable block, constructed between 1860 and 1879 as part of the estate of Lady Londonderry and originally associated with Garron Tower. It was designed by the Belfast firm of Lanyon and Lynn. The building is of rubble blackstone with sandstone dressings, covered by slate roofs and featuring red brick chimneys. It is arranged around three sides of a rectangular courtyard, with a wall across the fourth side that originally included ironwork gates set on square piers topped with stone ball finials. The design incorporates elements of the Scottish Baronial style, including stepped gables. Wooden window frames are found in the end gables, while the windows within the courtyard have been replaced with modern metal frames. The arched openings to the courtyard have also been glazed with modern panels. The gates are modern, and the courtyard itself has been landscaped with modern materials. The building is located within the grounds of St MacNissi’s College and sits on a slightly elevated position within the grounds, with a tarmac driveway and modern school buildings nearby. It overlooks a steep, wooded escarpment. The building has undergone several later conversions: initially to a hotel dining hall, then to St Joseph’s Dormitory for St MacNissi’s Grammar School, and most recently to a classroom block.
