Former Telephone Exchange, Beside 92 Garron Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is a small, simple building that offers a glimpse into the period when local telephone exchanges were common. Constructed between 1940 and 1959, it was designed by the architects of the Public Works Department of the Northern Ireland Ministry of Finance. The building is a single-storey, rectangular structure with a gabled roof. It has rendered walls and a slated roof covered in Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, with dark-toned ridge tiles. The gables have corbelled red tile haunches, and the building features cast iron gutters and downpipes. The west-facing gable has a rectangular timber doorway set in plain reveals. A small, rectangular, timber two-light fixed window is set into the east gable, with plain reveals, two courses of red tiles forming the cill, and a name panel inscribed 'Telephone Exchange' above it in the gable apex. The building is situated in a rural location within the garden of a single-storey cottage, alongside the cottage and set back slightly from the road. A public telephone kiosk (HB06/01/042) is located adjacent to the building on the roadside. The building is currently used as a store.
