Description

89 Garron Road is a mid-19th century terrace house built in 1849–50 by Lady Londonderry to designs by architect Charles Campbell. It was established as a post office from its inception. The building is Grade B2 listed.

The house is a symmetrical-fronted, single-storey structure of basalt rubble masonry in Tudor Revival style, built as one of a terrace of four identical cottages. The entrance elevation faces west and comprises three bays: two windows flanking a central projecting porch. The roof is laid with Bangor blue slates in regular courses with dark-toned ridge tiles. Basalt rubble chimneys with plain block cornices rise from each extremity; the right-hand chimney shares modern pots with the adjoining house, as does the left-hand chimney.

The walls feature a projecting eaves course, cast iron gutters and downpipes. Windows are rectangular timber two-light units with side-hung casements, double glazed with simulated margin lights. They are set in roughly rendered reveals with flat arches to the heads and projecting basalt cills. The porch is constructed of similar walling with an added projecting plinth and slate roof. Its gable contains shaped kneelers. A Gothic arched doorway frames a rectangular ledged timber door surmounted by a Gothic arched fanlight with intersecting glazing bars, all set within a rectangular Tudor-style drip moulding. The spandrel is painted black.

The rear elevation has a slate roof with a modern gabled dormer of smooth rendered finish containing a rectangular PVC window. The rear wall is smooth rendered on the left side, obscured by a later two-storey rear return with smooth rendered walls, synthetic slated roofs and rectangular PVC windows. The interior was rebuilt and a rear extension added in 1997–98.

The building stands within its terrace group in a rural location on the seaward side of the main coast road. It is set back slightly from the road with a small front garden bounded by a concrete blockwork wall (painted) with concrete copings and caps to gate piers. A modern steel gate provides access. The front plot is laid with beach pebbles and a cement screed path leads to the front door. To the rear is a concrete open yard area with two corrugated metal sheds and rough grass leading to the shoreline. Despite some degradation of its setting, the house retains most of its original appearance to the entrance front and remains part of an interesting group of buildings.
