Description

This is a two-storey building on Main Street, Larne, dating from approximately 1820 to 1839. The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1832 and is part of a terrace. The ground floor has been thoroughly modernised with a shop front that runs the full width of the building, featuring two large windows with canted fronts, a recessed entrance, and a modern shop sign. The first floor retains its original external features, with four windows visible. The roof is covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, and continues with the roof of the adjacent building at number 11-13 to the left. The first floor walls are smooth and painted, with moulded window surrounds and projecting string courses at sill level and between windows, at intermediate levels. The first-floor windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung with a 1 over 1 configuration and horns, set within recessed frames. Electric cabling runs between the eaves cornice and the window heads. A plaque is fixed to the wall between the second and third windows from the left, commemorating a sermon by John Wesley in 1771, and was presented by Betty Apsley. A projecting moulded eaves course with a concealed gutter sits behind the cornice, and a circular section cast iron downpipe is present. Photographs from the Lawrence and Green Collections illustrate the building’s appearance in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building stands immediately facing the pavement in the main street, originally forming part of a uniform composition with a listed shop to the left and a three-storey Edwardian building, formerly a bank, to the right, both of which now have modernised ground floors.
