Description

This is a plain, single-storey store building, likely dating from around 1910. It is situated on the north side of [?]Narrow Guage Road, just southeast of Larne town centre. The building measures approximately 25 metres by 11.5 metres and is adjoined by neighbouring buildings to the north and east. The exterior is rendered and painted.

The south-facing gable has a central vehicle entrance with a roller shutter and a large laminated signboard above. To the left of the entrance is a large window opening, now boarded up, and a similar window opening is positioned to the right. Along the longer west elevation, there is another vehicle entrance to the left of centre, followed by a large boarded-up window opening to the left and two further windows to the right. The curved roof is covered in felt.

The building represents a relatively large, although unremarkable, example of a structure employing a Belfast Truss roof, a design developed in the mid-19th century to meet demands for efficient, lightweight, and long-span roofs arising from the Industrial Revolution. McTear & Co., a Belfast felt-making firm, advertised such structures as early as 1866. Production continued until 1908. Another firm, Anderson & Co., began producing trusses in 1886, followed by their Mk II version in 1896, which emphasized maximizing long spans with minimal weight. This model was later adopted by other companies. The term "Belfast truss" is frequently used to describe timber bowstring trusses where the internal bracing members join the top curved member, rather than the bottom. The building was surveyed as part of a wider Belfast Roof Truss survey. It is considered to have industrial archaeological interest.
