Milepost, Garron Road, at junction with north end of Tower Road, Carnlough, Ballymena, Co Antrim

This is a mid-19th century cast-iron milepost, typical of those found along the Antrim Coast Road. It consists of two angled sides culminating in a triangular top, measuring 48.5 cm wide. Each side displays locations and distances in raised lettering: “Cushendall 5¼ miles; Belfast 44 miles; Glenarm 8 miles”. The milepost is situated beside the road on the inland side, in a rural setting on a scenic section of the Antrim Coast Road, near the rock formation called Cloghastucan. While the exact date of erection is unknown, similar mileposts appear on the Ordnance Survey map of 1903, suggesting a likely date range of the 1860s. It is of industrial archaeological interest.
