Description

This is an attractive building likely dating from the early 19th century, specifically between 1820 and 1839. It appears to have originated as two vernacular cottages, later renovated and combined into a single property. While retaining some original features, it is not considered to possess particular architectural or historic significance.

The building is a single-storey structure with rendered walls and a slated roof. It originally comprised a pair of cottages but is now unified. The north-facing entrance elevation features five bays with three windows alternating with two doors. The roof is covered in asbestos slates laid in regular courses, and incorporates three chimneys – one on each gable and a third at an intermediate position – all smooth and whitened. There is a PVC gutter, but no downpipe on the wall, with the gutter extending west to discharge into a modern cylindrical tank set within a recess in a garden wall. The wall itself is smooth and whitened, featuring a black painted plinth. The rectangular timber sliding sash windows are vertically hung, with a 2 over 2 glazing pattern and horns, exposed frames, plain reveals, and recessed cills. The rectangular timber doors are sheeted and set in plain reveals, both incorporating a half-door. The gable ends are plain, with a lean-to shed of corrugated iron attached to the east gable.

The building sits in a rural and scenic location, isolated from other development and facing the main coastal road with views overlooking the sea. It is set back slightly from the road and features a small front garden bounded by a hedge containing a central pedestrian gateway. This gateway is modern, composed of slatted timber gates hung between concrete piers with ball finials and panels incorporating coloured glass and seashells set in cement. A grassed area lies to the east of the house, bordered at the front by a drystone wall constructed from basalt rubble. A vehicular gateway of timber and wire, supported by wooden posts, is located at the eastern end. The building appears on an Ordnance Survey map dated 1832.
