Description

A detached three-bay single-storey vernacular cottage built around 1830, located in the townland of Galboly Upper on an elevated site on the south side of Garron Road overlooking Red Bay. Access is via a long lane locally known as White Lane.

The building is rectangular on plan, facing north. It is constructed of uncoursed rubble white limestone walling with rough-cast render. The pitched roof is currently covered with corrugated asbestos sheeting with a moulded steel ridge, though beneath this covering remains the original sod and straw thatch. The central dividing wall between the two main rooms supports timber purlins running between the gables, with timber rafters running perpendicular above these purlins. Rendered stone chimneystack are positioned at either end. Rainwater goods are of steel and only partial.

The north front elevation is symmetrical with two bays. It features a central square-headed door opening with partial timber frame surviving, and flanking square-headed window openings with shallow apex rendered dressings. The windows contain single steel casement frames. The east gable is blind and was originally abutted by a lean-to extension, now collapsed. The south rear elevation has two square-headed window openings and is built into the sloping terrain, while the west gable is blind.

A partially collapsed single-storey outbuilding of uncoursed rubble white limestone stands to the north.

A simple rectangular structure appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1832 at approximately the same location, though the map lacks sufficient detail to confirm this is the current building. The cottage is first identified with certainty on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857, which shows the building in its current configuration including one outbuilding to the north-east. The 1859 Griffith's Valuation records the cottage as valued at £15 shillings and leased by Frances Anne, Marchioness of Londonderry, to Alexander McAllister, a local farmer. McAllister occupied the site until around 1901 when Charles O'Boyle, also a farmer, took residence. The 1901 Census describes O'Boyle's property as a third-class dwelling consisting of two inhabited rooms with a thatched roof, together with a cowhouse, piggery and barn. The third edition Ordnance Survey map of 1903 shows both current outbuildings on the north-east side. James O'Boyle purchased the site outright and was recorded as owner in the First General Revaluation of Property in Northern Ireland (1936–57), continuing to reside there until at least the Second General Revaluation (1956–72), when the total rateable value remained £15.

The building now lies in a state of disrepair with the original thatch replaced by the corrugated asbestos covering. It is not considered to retain sufficient historic fabric to merit listing, though it remains an important feature of the landscape and holds local significance.
