Description

This is an early Victorian bridge, likely built between 1842 and 1859, carrying Garron Road over the River Foaran. The bridge is attributed to the engineer and architect Charles Lanyon. It is a small, single-arched structure built of snecked basalt rubble with pink sandstone voussoirs forming the segmental arch. A platband of limestone runs across the bridge and continues down as a raking coping to the angled abutments, although some of the coping is missing or has crumbled. Low rubble walls run along each side of the approach roads, continuing across the bridge as a parapet. A timber strut has been fixed inside the archway on the east side. The bridge is situated in a rural and scenic coastal area. The east side overlooks a rocky shore, with vegetation along the northern road embankment and later roughly poured concrete on the southern embankment. The west side looks over the River Foaran, with a mid-19th century masonry pump house nearby on the south bank. The River Foaran, reputedly the shortest river in Ireland, emerges from the cliff face approximately 50 metres upstream. The bridge first appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1857. It is noted as having industrial archaeological interest.
