Description
This is a two-storey gabled building of early to mid-19th century date, situated within a terrace in Carnlough, County Antrim. The building’s unusual front shape contrasts with some loss of original features. It is located within the Mill Tenement townland and lies within a conservation area.
The building is rendered with a slated roof and faces north. The front roof is covered with Bangor blue slates laid in regular courses, and includes modern rooflights. The eaves line rakes to one side where the building features a canted corner. Two rendered chimneys, each with a plain block cornice, are positioned on each gable. The front wall is smooth cement-rendered, featuring quoining at the extremities and a projecting frieze below the eaves. It has PVC gutters and a cast iron downpipe. The windows are rectangular timber sliding sash windows, vertically hung with a 1 over 1 configuration and horns, set within moulded stucco surrounds with a key-block. Each of the two doorways contains a rectangular timber glazed and panelled door, also set in similar surrounds. The west gable, which rises above the adjoining house, is smooth rendered and includes a small, rectangular, recessed blind panel to the attic, framed with wood. The east gable, again above the adjoining house, is rendered with a dashed finish and contains a rectangular timber window.
The rear elevation has a similar roof of synthetic slates in regular courses and a modern rooflight. Two rendered chimneys are present, one on each gable, and it has PVC rainwater goods. The rear wall is rendered with a wet dash, and contains two modern rectangular timber fixed windows with top-hung vents, one to each floor, with concrete cills. A return gable at the rear is finished with synthetic slates, timber barge boards, and PVC rainwater goods. It contains a rectangular doorway and two large modern timber windows of similar character to those at the rear to each floor.
The building stands within the built-up area of the village, centrally located within a terrace of three houses, facing a street lined with similarly-styled houses and featuring a pavement directly outside the main doorway. Behind the building is a small, shared concrete yard with 10-12 Bridge Street, which includes an open shelter with a brick gable and corrugated iron roof attached to the end of the rear return. A boundary wall, constructed of basalt rubble and partly rendered, runs along the rear yard. The building's construction may have occurred between 1840 and 1859, although a structure was present on the site as early as 1832, as evidenced by Ordnance Survey maps.
