Knocknowan, Old Glenarm Road, Drains, Carncastle, Larne, Co Antrim

Knocknowan is a two-storey, three-bay house built between 1860 and 1879. The house was significantly altered through modernisation and has lost much of its original character. Originally, it featured white-painted rendered walls, a slated roof, and vertically hung timber sash windows with full glazing bars. The original entrance was recessed within a semi-circular headed opening, featuring a panelled door topped by a fanlight with radial glazing bars. The house has now been updated with modern windows in larger openings, and a broad, projecting modern porch has been added over the entrance. The property is situated in a rural location within open farmland, set well back from the Old Glenarm Road, with plain, rebuilt outbuildings located behind the main house. A small property was shown on the first Ordnance Survey map, but the current house represents an enlargement of that earlier dwelling, which is visible on the 1903 Ordnance Survey map.
