Description
This is a well-preserved example of a mid-19th century ice house, notably accessible due to its freestanding nature and location within Carnfunnock Country Park. The circular structure features a domed roof constructed of basalt rubble and assorted stones, with red brick used for the segmental-arched entrance and the roof vault. The ice house is partly built into the hillside; weeds are present on the roof where outer stone and mortar have eroded, revealing the brickwork. It is situated in a rural setting within the country park, on an elevated site set into a grassy hillside with mature trees nearby. A tarmac path from the park provides access, and a signboard marks the location.
The ice house was constructed for James Agnew of Carncastle Lodge, built around the same time but later demolished in 1937. Only nearby farm buildings, two gate lodges on the main road (reference numbers HB06/03/003 and HB06/03/004), and the ice house remain as reminders of the original estate, which is now managed by Larne Borough Council as a country park. Although the precise year of construction is unknown, it appears on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting a date around 1850.
Architecturally, the ice house exhibits notable spatial organization, structural system, quality, and survival of interior features. Historically, it holds local interest and is considered a relatively rare example.
