Description
This is a late 19th-century boat house, dating from approximately 1880 to 1899, which contributes to the understanding of local estate life around the turn of the century. The building is rectangular and of symmetrical design, with walls finished in a crushed stone dry dash. Tower-like clasping buttresses rise above the wall level at each corner, featuring blackstone quoins. Both the towers and the wall areas are topped by crenellated parapets of blackstone. The entrance, facing south-east, is a centrally placed segmental-arched opening with alternating long and short rock-faced voussoirs and stone surrounds. A modern corrugated steel shutter door now replaces the original sheeted double doors. The building is situated in a rural area on a slight promontory with open coastal views, close to the shoreline and facing a quay which projects into the water. A grassy area lies to the north, a car park to the south, and a hard pathway runs across the front. The setting has been negatively impacted by the construction of the adjacent car park. It likely dates to around 1898, when Cairndhu (reference number HB06/03/008), the house with which it appears to be associated, was built for John Stewart Clark, and first appeared on the Ordnance Survey map of 1903. The building's former and current use is as a boat house. It is owned by the local government and was delisted on April 28, 2000.
