Craigy Hill Methodist Church, Brustin Brae Road, Larne, Co Antrim

Craigy Hill Methodist Church is a modern building constructed between 1960 and 1979, designed by E.J.J. Phillipson, ARIBA, of Larne, and opened in 1969. The church occupies a square plan and incorporates a low hyperbolic paraboloid roof, connected to an earlier rectangular church hall via a glazed lobby. The main entrance faces southwest. The church walls are built of rustic brickwork, punctuated by windows crafted from patterned precast concrete blocks arranged in panels, with tinted glass set in random leaded patterns. The roof is supported by diagonally placed, battered reinforced concrete corner piers. A clerestory is present with glazing in clear glass within varnished pine frames, accompanied by white painted barge boards, and a felt roof covering topped with a central polygonal spirelet in blue painted metal. The glazed link to the earlier hall features a flat roof and a projecting, segmental headed porch constructed from concrete.

The earlier rectangular church hall, located to the west, possesses a low-pitched felt-covered roof, white painted barge boards, rustic brick walls, and PVC windows recessed with concrete cills and cement lower panels. The setting includes an open site at a road corner, facing a housing estate, with lawns on three sides and a tarmac car park at the front. Concrete post and wire fencing defines the boundaries.
