3 The Whins, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 2DS

3 The Whins is a post-war house built around 1965 in a modern style, designed by James Loggie of Gerald R. Smith and Partners, architects of Belfast, and originally constructed for the contractor himself. The design features a single-storey, flat-roofed form on an asymmetrical plan, with a garage incorporated beneath one end. The roof is covered in asphalt, and the walls are built from grey concrete brick. Green painted sheeted fascias are positioned between parapet upstands, and the original pine windows have been replaced with double-glazed units that replicate the original pattern. The house occupies an elevated site at the head of a sloping lawn. A curved screen wall defines the front steps, and a shared driveway and turning area have been developed in conjunction with the adjacent property at No. 4, which is built in a similar style. The property has been extended twice, though the dates of these alterations are unknown.
