4 The Whins, Larne, Co Antrim, BT40 3DS

This is a post-war house, built around 1965 and extended in 1973, demonstrating a thoroughly modern architectural style. Designed by James Loggie of Gerald R. Smith and Partners, architects of Belfast, the house was originally intended as a single-storey, flat-roofed dwelling with an asymmetrical layout and a garage situated beneath one end. The roof is covered with rubber and white stone chippings. The walls are constructed of grey concrete brick, while the fascia is white painted sheeted, with cedar panelling over the front steps. Some windows are full height and framed with cedar, incorporating cedar lower panels; others are smaller, metal-framed side-hung casements within a wooden subframe. Projecting beam ends are used as a decorative feature on two elevations. A timber and steel open-tread external staircase was added in 1973, leading to the entrance front. The property is situated on an elevated site at the head of a sloping lawn. A curved screen wall fronts the steps, and a shared driveway and turning area are laid out in conjunction with the neighbouring property at No. 3, which is built in a similar style. An architect's plan for the 1973 extension is held by the owners.
