Description

Larne College of Further Education, located at 32-34 Pound Street, Larne, is a large building constructed between 1957 and 1959 and designed by John Scott, ARIBA, who served as Education Architect to Antrim County Education Committee. It was built for Antrim County Education Committee as Larne Technical College and was officially opened on 11 November 1959 by the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, the Right Hon. Viscount Brookeborough.

The building is an example of the International Modern style. It is primarily constructed of rustic brick with concrete surrounds to the windows. A recessed ground-floor colonnade features circular concrete piers, and the entrance front incorporates brightly coloured mosaic tiling. The building is arranged in three units: a three-storey general classroom block, a four-storey engineering and science block, and a section for communal facilities.

The forecourt is paved with concrete slabs and includes an abstract geometrical tile panel in yellow, red, and black, along with three concrete planter boxes with angled sides. A panel of geometrically patterned tiling, in grey, black, red, green, white, and blue, is located to the left of the main entrance, with a similar geometrical pattern in terrazzo to the front steps. A heraldic panel in Portland stone, dated 1959, is positioned above the main entrance. The entrance doors are framed with geometrically patterned hardwood over glazing.

The building stands within its own well-maintained grounds within the built-up area of the town, with its entrance front facing a main road.

References include the Irish Builder and Engineer (9 March 1957) and the Belfast News-Letter (12 November 1959).
