Description
12 The Vennel is a small, plain two-storey terraced house in Glenarm, which assumed its present form around 1900. The building is rendered in dry dash (salt and pepper finish) and sits on the north side of The Vennel, facing roughly south.
The front elevation is symmetrical. The ground floor features a panelled timber door with a plain rectangular fanlight to the right, and to the left is a flat-arch window with a timber sash frame (1/1). The first floor has a smaller window directly above, set close to the eaves, fitted with a replacement timber frame with hopper opener. The gabled roof is slated with a rendered chimneystack on the west side.
To the rear, the main building has a doorway at ground floor level with a timber and glazed replacement door, and a first-floor window matching the style of the front elevation. The rear elevation is finished in unpainted cement render. A large single-storey flat-roofed extension has been added to the rear, appearing to date from after around 1973, with two windows of varying size on its west face. Rainwater goods are wholly PVC.
The valuation records suggest the property was built sometime after 1859, with annotations indicating a date of around 1900. It is possible that the building incorporates fabric from an earlier single-storey structure that was raised in height, a pattern common to many buildings on Vennel Street. The building has undergone unsympathetic alterations in recent years, including the flat-roofed extension and unsuitable window frame insertions. It does not meet criteria for listing and is not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest.
